DS106 Weekly Summary 2

Week two is over in DS106 and I think it went better than last week. Except for the reading assignments (I’m not much for reading) I enjoyed everything in week 2, especially making our own gifs. It’s been many years since I last made a gif so it was refreshing to revisit an old friend. Here are the assignments and some random thoughts.

Four daily creates: Carrots tdc, Octopus tdc, Guess the movie tdc & Neighborhood tdc

Visual Assignments: Super-Rich, Pokemon Richzilla, Trading Card, Movie Poster, Superhero Banner

I think I did a better job with the visual assignments compared to week one. I enjoyed doing them a bit more than last week although that could be do to the subject matter. I will always have fun being able to do anything involving a superhero, this week I used Superman and the Hulk. I also got to throw in a little Godzilla too on my Pokémon card. The total amount of stars I chose was 13.5, meeting the 12 star requirement and the five assignment requirement.

Right now the photo assignments are giving me trouble because I do not like photography. I used to enjoy taking pictures a decade ago but I’d much rather shoot film. When I’m taking pictures I feel like I’m regressing and using an antiquated technology.

One thing that made me a little nervous this week was posting the swimsuit picture I took in the DesignBlitz. While the photo is G rated, people can be uptight and someone could have been offended. In the end I said just put it up, there is so much else going on in the world right now this is very insignificant. People are getting shot, this is just a girl in a bikini. Move on.

My blog is finally feeding to the class on the DS106 page. That was a major pain to get set-up last week as I have never had a blog before and this one will be gone as soon as this class is over. I think I’ll keep my Twitter account though…

The daily creates were fun as usual, the answer to my guess the movie in case it wasn’t obvious was Rocky. If anyone hasn’t seen Rocky sorry I spoiled the ending! I didn’t mention in my neighborhood daily create that West Springfield, MA is where I grew up. I still call it Wes Side to this day and flash a W with my hand when saying it. People always say put the gang symbol away which it is NOT, it’s just a W representing where I grew up.

My question this week is are we going to do some video projects soon? I know stories can be told in photos but I’d like to do more modern stuff like film shorts, creating special effects, etc. Something random and unexpected like the gif assignment we had would be fun too.

Visual Assignment Week 2 #5 (1 Star)

Doctor David Banner: physician, scientist; searching for a way to tap into the hidden strengths that all humans have. Then an accidental overdose of gamma radiation alters his body chemistry. And now, when David Banner grows angry or outraged, a startling metamorphosis occurs.

Hulk Banner
The Creature is wanted for a murder he didn’t commit. David Banner is believed to be dead; and he must let the world think that he is dead, until he can find a way to control the raging spirit that dwells within him…

The assignment was http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/superhero-banner/ worth 1 star.

This was my favorite TV show as a child. The text in italics is a direct quote from the opening of the show. I chose this because I love the Hulk and I’m guessing some of the younger generation might not know the Hulk had a TV show where a bodybuilder was painted green and played the Hulk. More fun with Paint! The original picture:

I did a little copy and paste action by the autograph, I just copied some blue parts and pasted them over the autograph. I used the add text box in Paint to write the text on the top left. I then copied the image below and pasted it over the Hulk.

I only copied the words and left out the surrounding area. This may have been only 1 star but probably my favorite visual assignment, likely do to the subject matter.

Visual Assignment Week 2 #4 (2 Stars)

Thirteen years ago a man had a vision, that one day films will be made with no budget yet still be enjoyable. Over ten movies and a decade later, the movies have no budget but he is still working on that enjoyable part. It’s Whackbag Films, bad acting by good people! All your favorites can be seen on their website: The Cereal Killer, Yub, The Doug, Sven, Salsa Doom, Crumb, Joey Green, Furious George, The Lauja and more!

The assignment was http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/create-a-movie-poster-for-your-website/ worth 2 stars.

I chose this assignment because I love making films and wanted to update an old “poster” I had made years ago. I used paint again. I colored over the middle picture with black, cropped out the bottom pictures and added the text where people may find Whackbag Films. This is the original:

New Logo

The original is too busy with photos and there is no information about our websites. I also wanted to make sure our slogan was visible, “bad acting by good people”.

Visual Assignment Week 2 #3 (4.5 stars)

The Magic Men (H2O, Fireball and The Shocker) have defeated Freddy, Jason and Chucky. Thor has his hammer Mjölnir back from The Doug. The Magic Men meet up with X-Ray who activates a transportation device and disappears. The group in shock yells “Wha Happened?” as their leader is now missing…

Magic Men 2

The visual assignment was http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/movie-trading-cards/ worth 4.5 stars.

I chose this assignment as again, I like making playing cards. I have played Magic the Gathering on and off for about a decade. I also love my own movies (as everyone should!) so I chose the most recent one I made for this card. I used paint to create the card. I drew a blue border around the card, added a painted white stripe on the top and finally the four text boxes seen on the card. This is the original picture.

Visual Assignment Week 2 #2 (3 stars)

Godzilla is the most powerful monster in the universe but he is trapped inside a human. Use your Poke-Power to transform Rich into the King of the Monsters, Godzilla! Godzilla has a fifty percent chance of destroying any Pokémon that stands in his way!

The assignment was http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/pokemon-card/ worth three stars.

I used http://www.mypokecard.com/en/ to create the card. You just go to the site and type in text where required. You can also add pictures which I did as shown. The picture of me is from when I was playing Thor for the Special Olympics. Here is the original:

Thor 1

This is the picture of Godzilla I used.

Here is a screen shot of the site I used:

poke gen

I chose this assignment because I thought it’d be cool to have my own playing card. I have been a huge Godzilla fan since I was young and chose my power to be I turn into Godzilla.

Visual Assignment Week 2 #1 (3 stars)

It’s a bird, it’s a plane… it’s Super-Rich! One day this young man was just wearing a Superman hoody at a Christmas party, the next day that hoody gave him the ability to fly. Super-Rich uses his new powers to pose for photos while flying in the sky!

Are we there yet

The assignment was http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/are-we-there-yet/ and was worth 3 stars.

This was done with paint. I traced a line around my body, hit copy and pasted myself into the picture of the sky. After I was pasted in the original photo I resized it to a smaller photo as my tracing skills are terrible with a mouse. The reason I did this is because I am wearing a Superman hoody,  I should be in the air! And now I am.

The picture I copied myself from:

Xmas 2015 me

This is the original picture:

I took two of my pictures at a martial arts studio in Stafford, the other two by my house in Fredericksburg. Not sure if I missed the mark but here we go!

designblitz dominance

This a squirrel in my backyard eating something I can’t make out. I thought this would be a good example of dominance, which is where the eye goes first when looking at a design. I figure most eyes will go right to the squirrel and not notice anything else in the photo.

designblitz message

This is my example form, function & message. The handicap sign conveys it’s message clearly – the spot is reserved for handicapped parking and if you park there when you are not supposed to, your vehicle will be towed and you will be fined. The picture of a person in a wheelchair is a real world object and that image is well known across the U.S.

designblitz typography

My example of typography. The studio is using three different fonts here with the letter T in Taekwondo having it’s own special font. There is also an image of a person doing a jumping kick on the top right, the image is the same color of the letter T (red). Using the same color associates the letters in Taekwondo with someone performing martial arts, sending the message Taekwondo is a martial art.

designblitz metaphor

Metaphors and symbols. Here we have a girl in a bikini and to me the message is clear, look at me. Sports Illustrated is using a pretty girl to represent their magazine. There is nothing creative or complex here although she is centered in the photo. Every year since 1964 SI releases an issue filled with bikini clad women in the winter. Sex sells and this issue has been popular for over fifty years. Guess they did something right having pretty women be their symbol.

Two animated Gifs DS106

We had to create two animated gifs for DS106 this week. I used http://ezgif.com/video-to-gif to create both. The first one I picked was http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/subtitlegif/ . This is a short scene from a movie I filmed way back in 2005. The hero, Joey Green, takes a volleyball off his head. I instantly thought of this because my friends and I have suffered volleyball injuries from running into one another and not yelling “Got it”. After implementing the got it method there were quite a few times were someone would yell got it and immediately yell don’t got it! So I added the captions in Windows Movie Maker and used ezgif to convert the WMV to a GIF.

Gif 1 DS106

The second gif assignment I chose was http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/favorite-musician-gif/ . In 1983 I heard a song that would change my life, “Metal Health” by Quiet Riot. This is a clip from the video for Metal Health with Carlos Cavazo playing the guitar and singer Kevin DuBrow (RIP) head banging behind him. This one song made me want to learn how to play guitar. Because of this song, I have released eight independent albums and I also play in a worship band at my church.

Gif 2 DS106

I hope both gifs play in your browser!

Week 2 – Thoughts/Ideas – Vignelli

I have to say I found this an incredibly boring read. I am not saying the publication does not have its merits, someone who is writing a book or professionally online may find this very useful. I have no plans of ever doing either. I knew I was in trouble when two out of the three design words he referenced early on I did not know the definition of: Syntactic and Pragmatic.  To help anyone else who may not use these words on a daily basis –

Syntactic: of or according to syntax (syntax is the set of rules, principles, and processes that govern the structure of sentences in a given language).

Pragmatic: dealing with things sensibly and realistically in a way that is based on practical rather than theoretical considerations.

I am familiar with syntax but syntactic was a word I had never heard/read before. I’m not sure what else to say in Vignelli’s work, it is well written and many will find it helpful. At the very least I learned the definition of the words noted above…

DS106 Weekly Summary 1

Week one is over in DS106 and the week started off with frustration. A domain of my own constantly crashed on my PC and in error I signed up on the Mary Wash blogs. Luckily this site works and I’ve been able to blog all week. I feel like I did a good job completing the assignments and tried to be creative as well. I would think one issue surrounding my past work and my future work is I can’t get away from violence. One of my daily creates (the video) ended in something violent and another had Darth Vader holding a chopped off head. Although the violence is usually goofy I don’t know how to get away from it. My work for the week.

I shot a short intro video about myself, it was hard knowing what to say to a group of strangers. I had fun playing around with the green screen though.

I wrote a very lengthy about myself and experience with film on the blog.

I completed the visual assignments. I do not have any photo editing software so I had to get creative with paint! All five are under this post and I met the ten star requirement.

The photo safari was fun but I have no skill as a photographer and used an iPhone to take the pictures.

My thoughts on the photo tips and what I used.

I did four daily creates. The video that required walking was fun to shoot. I used Action Movie FX and a Bee Gees song to put this together. By far my favorite daily create, I love shooting and editing video. Photos? Not so much.

The other three daily creates:

Overall a fun first week in DS106 but my blog still is not feeding to the classes. As mentioned earlier and in other blogs, very frustrating week to start as well. I hope we have more video projects in the future. I enjoy storytelling through video and doing anything that includes music would be great too (I am also a musician)!
